Education and Training Situation
In the early 1950s, a "Course in Film Design" was established for the first time at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts, now the University of Music and Performing Arts - the son of Austrian cinema pioneer Luise Kolm-Veltée, Walter Kolm-Veltée was decisively involved in this development of film education in Austria. This laid the foundation for the "Film Academy of Vienna", which to this day, as part of the University of Music and Performing Arts, is the only teaching institution for film in the country. Since October 2020, the Vienna Film Academy has changed its location from Metternichgasse to the Future Art Lab (FAL) at the mdw campus on Anton-von-Webern-Platz.
The importance of moving images is growing in view of the increasing media convergence and multiplication of playback forms. Art universities and universities of applied sciences are therefore also increasingly offering their own classes or courses in film, video, media art, television and animation throughout Austria.
Small, private educational providers such as the "Vienna Film School" also advertise practical training as filmmakers.
