Publishers
Apart from the self-organization of authors, the most obvious change from the historical situation can be seen in the development of an independent Austrian publishing industry. This refers not so much to the independence from German publishing as to the replacement of state, municipal, corporate and church publishers by private independent publishers from the 1970s onward.
Austrian publishers received their greatest support in the Austrian publishing subsidy concept developed in 1992, which made it possible to promote literary and cultural journalistic publishing programs, and through the transformation of the originally contractually agreed book price fixing into a statutory book price fixing introduced in 2000. The biggest step into general public attention was taken by the publishing houses together with the literary institutions in 1995 with the organization of the Austria focus at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
