Social Institutions
The three most important social institutions in the field of literature in Austria are the "Social Fund for Writers and Translators" created in 1977, the "Artists' Social Insurance Fund" (KSVF) also created for all other sectors in 2001, and the SKE Fund (cultural and social institutions) of the collecting societies, which has existed since 1980. The funds of the "Social Fund for Writers and Translators" are used to grant subsidies for health insurance contributions and old-age subsidies in the event of insufficient or no old-age pensions; the KSVF funds are used to pay pension insurance contributions in full or in part and, since the amendment of the law in 2011, also to grant subsidies for health insurance contributions, as well as support in emergencies. This applies to artists of all disciplines recognized by the KSVF. The SKE Fund is used to promote new projects and young art and to provide support in social emergencies.
